In the recipe we tell you how to make them in various ways, either baked or fried, but I wonder if you knew that in addition to healthy, light and delicious dishes, with the air fryer you can also prepare delicious desserts! Yes, this small kitchen appliance called an oil-free fryer or an air fryer is becoming so fashionable for very good reasons, and that is that it is a great helper with which you can cook practically anything.

Air fryers, like Tefal's Actifry Genius , work in the same way as a convection oven, combining hot air with gentle automated movements. In this way, a result very similar to that of traditional frying is achieved, without having to use hardly any oil, or start the extractor because there are no annoying odors to eliminate.

For this reason and for how easy and fast it is to prepare any dish with it, the air fryer has earned a prominent place in the kitchen. It is a great help with which we can make an endless number of recipes, including rich desserts or varied sweet preparations of the richest, which will also be healthier than cooked in a traditional way.

One of the sweet recipes that I like the most is this one that we share today. Some delicious and original donuts or apple donuts , which are very rich and are fried with just a brush with a spark of oil.

healthy donuts recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 apples*
  • 2 eggs
  • 50ml milk
  • 70g flour**
  • 1 tablespoon ActiFry sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ActiFry oil
  • Sugar glass

*Use larger or smaller apples according to your preferences when making the donuts: the larger the diameter of the apple, you will get wider donuts or ones that are more donut-sized.

**You can use gluten-free flour to make the recipe suitable for celiacs.

Preparation

Preparation of the apple donuts:

  1. Prepare the dough with which we will cover the apple: first, we have to separate the egg yolks from the whites. We can do this very easily with the Tellier separator . In a bowl, mix the yolks with the milk and the flour, until we can't see the flour and everything is integrated and without lumps.
  2. In another bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff with the sugar until a light meringue is obtained. We can beat the whites with a manual rod whisk or do it with an electric hand mixer .
  3. When we have the meringue ready, we will put it together with the mixture of the yolks with the flour and milk. We will add it little by little with enveloping movements, until it is completely integrated and we will reserve.
  4. Prepare the apple: Wash the apples, carefully remove the core, using a knife or the WMF apple corer and cut them into slices (not thin, but not too thick or they will not be appetizing to eat) .
  5. Once cut, we will bathe them in the mixture that we have reserved, so that the entire slice is coated with dough, and we will arrange them on a plate or on a tray until it is time to cook them.

We fry the apple donuts:

  • If we fry in the Actifry with hardly any oil:
  1. Remove the tank from the Actifry Oil Free Fryer , brush it with olive oil and put it back into the fryer
  2. Preheat with manual mode at 220 °C, for 5 minutes.
  3. After the time has elapsed, we remove the vat again and arrange the apple slices so that they do not touch each other and fry them in turns, programming in mode 3 for 16 minutes each time, until they are all done.
  4. Before presenting them, we sprinkle them with icing sugar and, go for them! (I leave you more ideas for these donuts below).

Here is the step-by-step video so you can easily prepare them in your Actifry fryer.

    • We fry in a frying pan or iron fryer:
    1. If your option is to fry them in the more traditional way, put plenty of soft oil in a frying pan or iron fryer and heat it. When the oil is hot, introduce the apple donuts. Few at a time, leaving space between them, and do them all over.
    2. Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon to drain the oil and prevent them from breaking, and arrange them on a plate lined with kitchen paper to absorb excess oil. Go making all the donuts in batches.

If you make the donuts in the oven:

    1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC.
    2. Arrange a baking paper on a baking tray, and place the apple donuts on it, leaving space between them. Spray oil on top of the donuts with oil-based release spray (Gobel's is), and place in the oven.
    3. Bake the donuts, about 12 minutes on each side, and remove from the oven when they are done (do not move away from the oven to control their cooking) and let them lose heat.

    Notes on making the dough:

These apple donuts are ideal for a snack or for a Sunday breakfast. They are rich and very quick and easy to make. You can make them more or less thick, and they will be more or less large depending on the diameter of the apples you choose.

Also remember that you can prepare them to your liking, giving them your personal touch:

    • Try flavoring the milk with vanilla, cardamom, or nutmeg.
    • Use coconut or panela sugar to prepare the batter mixture
    • Change the cow's milk for an oat drink, or for your usual vegetable drink.
    • Use ground cinnamon to dust the apple donuts before serving, if you don't want to add more sugar.

And if you want to prepare the dough for the batter with any flour other than wheat, you can also do it and we'd love it if you tell us how you've versioned them!

    Notes on decorating apple donuts

Apple donuts can be served as is, fried and with sugar on top, or you can apply a delicious coating. Here are some ideas to finish them off:

    Healthy Apple Donuts

    • Melt the fondant chocolate of your choice over the fire or in the microwave (either more or less intense in cocoa), and totally or partially submerge the apple donuts. The inner apple and chocolate go great with hazelnuts, almonds, chopped walnuts or even pistachios.
    • You can also cover them with melted white chocolate, and sprinkle laminated almonds on top, or colored chocolate shavings, they are very colorful and rich.
    • Brush them or dip them in condensed milk! It is more liquid and does not cool like chocolate, so do not overdo it, but the touch of condensed milk with the apple and some crunch or colored balls is delicious.
    • Mix sugar with a tablespoon of sugar, and also add 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon. Generously brush the donuts with that mixture, and they will give you the wave. If the mixture is white sugar, brown sugar and panela and cinnamon, the wave will be double.
    • Make a lemon glaze, if you have used red apple the combination will be absolutely successful.
