I hadn't paid much attention to tofu, I found it bland. Until I learned to really add flavor! This recipe for Silken Tofu with Spicy Soy Sauce is extremely easy to prepare, bringing intensity and heat to tofu in a way I highly recommend you try.

The sauce we make is a delicious Soy, Chili and Ginger sauce. For its part, we'll eat the tofu raw, which is why I recommend you find a good soft, delicatesilken tofu.

If you make the recipe with regular firm tofu, I recommend cutting it into bite-sized cubes. If you prefer to stir-fry it first in a wok, you can also... and you'll have two different recipes to use in your day-to-day.

Tofu con salsa de soja

Ingredients

  • 1 block of silken tofu (silken tofu) or 1 block of firm tofu*
  • 2-3 tbsp soy sauce
  • Chives, chopped (to taste, 1 or 2 tablespoons)
  • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
  • 1 small fresh chile, chopped (a little more if you really like it spicy)
  • 1-2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 1 small garlic clove, chopped or grated (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp toasted sesame seeds

*If you can find it, I recommend silken, soft tofu; but the recipe is shown with both types of tofu (it’s also delicious with firm tofu).

Preparation

  1. Place the silken tofu carefully on a plate so it doesn't break (if you use firm tofu, see below for how to prepare it).
  2. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, ginger, chiles, garlic (if using), rice vinegar and sesame oil.
  3. Pour the sauce you prepared over the silken tofu.
  4. Sprinkle the chopped chives and toasted sesame seeds on top.
  5. Serve cold and enjoy.

Tofu con soja y jengibre

Notes:

  • Besides chives, or instead of them, you can also use a bit of chopped leek, or my favorite is a little chopped red onion.

If you use firm tofu:

If using firm tofu, it is recommended that you prepare the tofu: Drain the firm tofu well and dry it with paper towels (you can also press it lightly to remove excess water). Then, cut it into slices or large cubes, as you prefer, but this will be the best way to enjoy the recipe. Arrange the cubes in a bowl or plate, and pour the sauce over them. You can garnish with a little chives.
