My most chocolate-loving self comes today with a recipe that is perfect for improvising a snack or preparing a festive breakfast: an irresistible Nutella braided crown. A sweet that tastes like a crunchy chocolate croissant in every bite and that you can enjoy straight from the oven or a few hours later, if any slice is left!
This crown has no secrets in its preparation, and since we’re going to use refrigerated dough it’s very easy and quick to make. You only need to have a couple of puff pastry sheets and a jar of your favorite chocolate-hazelnut spread on hand. The rest is a breeze, because it requires nothing more than a little skill to form a two-strand braid. A very simple task.
To turn this crown into a festive breakfast or snack, I suggest baking it in a special utensil that is perfect for serving it straight to the table: the Low casserole, Shallow Casserole type by Le Creuset. Besides preparing wonderful stews, it’s an ideal dish for baking breads, cakes and, of course, a spectacular Nutella braided crown.
Would you like a slice of this delicious crown? Let’s get to it!
Ingredients
- 2 rectangular puff pastry sheets of 400 g each
- 350 g of Nutella
- 1 beaten egg
- 50 g of sliced almonds
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
- Grease your Low casserole, Shallow Casserole type by Le Creuset 26 cm casserole with butter or using a non-stick spray.
- Spread out the puff pastry sheets on the countertop or on an auxiliary griddle (such as this stainless steel Zassenhaus ).
- Spread the Nutella (or the chocolate-hazelnut spread you use) evenly over both sheets. Distribute it uniformly, leaving a clean border of about 1.5 cm around the edges.
- Roll each pastry lengthwise and, with a sharp knife, cut the rolls lengthwise down the middle, without cutting all the way through (leaving an uncut edge).

Notes
- The recipe uses sliced almonds sprinkled over the crown, but you can omit them if you prefer.
- Besides chocolate-hazelnut spread, this braid is fantastic filled with any nut praline you make at home or buy from your trusted shop.
- If you want a more chocolatey touch, you can decorate it with a drizzle of melted chocolate on top as soon as you take it out of the oven.
