What is Korean Banana Milk

Banana milk (called " banana uyu" in the country of origin, 바나나 우유) is a vegetable drink, which basically consists of banana-flavored milk with a slight hint of vanilla.

Contrary to what many of you may think, it is not a newly discovered drink or the discovery of a new drink now that alternative vegetable milks are becoming popular. It is a drink with almost 50 years of history , since it was introduced in Korea by the Binggrae company in 1974, who still markets it worldwide.

Its flavor and richness made it popular quickly, and in fact it became so popular that famous and influential people in the country could be seen drinking it publicly.

Over time, other brands came out competing with Binggrae's original formula, but the brand continued and continues to be the most popular and sold in all eastern countries.

What's in banana milk?

The original banana milk is the Korean one popularized by the aforementioned brand, and basically contains 85% milk, mineral water, sugar, 0.32% concentrated banana juice, carotene, and banana and vanilla aromas in its composition.

For reasons of conservation and marketing, originally aromas are used above all for the production of banana milk, but a banana milk can be made practically with the flavor of the original with natural ingredients and that we usually have in the kitchen. And that is the recipe that we will see next!

What does banana milk taste like and what is it like?

Basically, banana milk tastes like a banana! But reduced by its dissolution in milk and also enjoys a soft touch of vanilla that feels fabulous.

In texture, the truth is that it is soft and is quite light, very similar to soy or almond milk, or something lighter than oat milk.

Keep in mind, and I think this is important, that to make banana milk we use half milk and half water: if we used all milk, it would be a smoothie, and it would also be thicker.

Recipe to make banana milk (how to make Korean banana milk)

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe plantains, cut into chunks
  • 1 glass of milk (260 ml)
  • 1 glass of mineral water (260 ml)
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup (you can also use light honey)
  • 1 tsp or a few drops of pure vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. Put all the ingredients in the blender and blend for a few seconds, until you get a smooth mixture.
  2. Serve in glasses immediately, or store in the fridge in a well-stoppered bottle (maximum 1 and a half days).

Grades

  • If you keep it in the fridge, shake it before serving (you will see after a few hours that the milk has taken two phases, and darkened a bit, but after shaking it vigorously it will return to its normal state and you will see that it is still delicious).
  • The usual thing is to take it as the ingredients are indicated, but personally I love to accompany it with a little cinnamon when I serve it.
  • The usual and original thing is to make the recipe with cow's milk, but you can use another type of milk, either for looking for a 100% vegetable drink or for the desire to vary the flavor. In that case, I recommend using almond milk, it will change the taste of the result and the truth is that it is also very rich.
