Although they have been on the market for some time, the rise of ceramic frying pans is relatively recent. Until not so long ago, they were fairly unknown, but they have made their way into many kitchens, especially among those looking for healthy, chemical-free options who don’t want to give up the comfort of non-stick pans that prevent food from sticking!
That’s one of their many benefits, but there are more. The best manufacturers know this, which is why there is now a wide variety of ceramic pans available. At Claudia&Julia, we embraced them some time ago and have given them the attention they deserve. That’s why we offer the best ceramic frying pans.
In this post, we show you why they are so successful and discuss:
- Advantages and disadvantages of ceramic frying pans
- Ceramic pans vs. Teflon
- How to cook with ceramic pans
- How to clean and care for ceramic pans
- Which ceramic pan to choose

1. Advantages and disadvantages of ceramic frying pans
Let’s explore them further, starting with the advantages of ceramic pans:
- Undoubtedly, the biggest advantage is that ceramic pans are good for your health – they are healthy frying pans. Their ceramic coating is completely free from PTFE (commonly known as Teflon, a brand name for this material), PFOA, and other PFAs. High-end ceramic pans are also free from lead and cadmium.
- These substances are not required in their production, making the manufacturing process much more environmentally friendly. They avoid persistent pollutants in the environment and living beings. Their environmental impact is significantly lower – they are more sustainable and eco-friendly.
- Another advantage is their high heat resistance. Many models can withstand up to 400°C, compared to traditional non-stick pans that tolerate a maximum of around 220°C to 260°C.
- The ceramic coating is harder and more resistant to wear and abrasion, although we always recommend protecting all pans when storing them and avoiding metal utensils during cooking to prevent scratches.
- Their non-stick ability. We also consider this a disadvantage – why? Because manufacturers use different technologies in producing their pans and hardening the ceramic surface. This affects the non-stick performance. For example, Sol-gel ceramic pans or water-based ceramic pans are known for their excellent non-stick properties.
- They are very easy to clean. Their smooth surface makes cleaning quick and easy. You only need a soft sponge and non-abrasive soap.
- As relatively new products, there is already a wide range of models to choose from, which is a clear sign of how well they have been received by those looking for an alternative to traditional non-stick coatings. Manufacturers continue to research and innovate to meet this growing demand.
As you can see, they offer many advantages – but they also have some drawbacks:
- Their non-stick ability. As mentioned, we consider it both a strength and a weakness. While the ceramic surface is non-stick, it doesn’t offer the same non-stick quality as traditional non-stick coatings. It’s important to use oil when cooking with them to prevent food from sticking. That said, regular use improves their non-stick surface. And as mentioned, some models have excellent non-stick performance.
- Although they are more resistant than traditional non-stick pans, they are less durable than iron or stainless steel pans. If dropped or hit, they are more likely to crack compared to those two materials.
- Being relatively new to the market, we don’t yet know how long they last – the actual lifespan of a ceramic pan. Manufacturers are continuing to improve them, so future models may last longer. In any case, it’s essential to use and clean them as instructed to keep them in top condition.
2. Ceramic pans vs. Teflon
Both options are ideal for cooking delicate foods or recipes that require gentle cooking, as they prevent sticking and treat ingredients gently. However, in terms of non-stick performance, Teflon pans still offer the best non-stick results, which means that food sticks less with Teflon. This is due to the PTFE coating.
Ceramic coatings don’t have this exact property, although some ceramic pans offer excellent non-stick performance. Also, brands are constantly researching and improving their products, so ceramic pans are not just a trend – they’re here to stay.
Additionally, they have other qualities that make them a great option for those seeking a non-Teflon alternative. They’re more sustainable, eco-friendly, heat-resistant, and more durable against wear and tear.
3. How to cook with ceramic pans
At Claudia&Julia, we place great importance on the care and maintenance of all cookware, especially frying pans. They are without a doubt one of the most-used kitchen tools, and it's up to us to make them last as long as possible and keep them in great condition. That’s how we ensure that, besides buying healthy pans, we also keep them healthy.
If you're wondering how to season ceramic pans – you don’t need to. Ceramic pans do not need seasoning. Once you receive your pan at home, just clean it with a soft sponge and some soap, and you’re ready to start cooking. As a non-stick alternative, ceramic pans are excellent for delicate foods or those that tend to stick, as well as for gentle cooking.
When we buy our first ceramic pan, the main question is often how to use a ceramic pan for the first time. Here are the most important tips – many of which apply to all types of pans:
- To ensure it lasts a long time, never use high heat – not for the first time or later. Overheating can damage the coating and reduce its non-stick properties.
- Heat the pan gradually, starting low and increasing slowly.
- Ceramic heats up very quickly and distributes heat evenly, so it’s important to avoid overheating to prevent burning the food.
- Cook with a little oil to prevent food from sticking.
- Don’t add cold food straight from the fridge; let it come to room temperature to avoid reducing the pan’s heat.
- Wait until the food is cooked before flipping or removing it.
- Once done, remove the pan from heat and allow it to cool before cleaning.
- Always use silicone, nylon, or wooden utensils, and never cut food directly on the pan’s surface.
4. How to clean and maintain ceramic pans
After the first use, the next question is how to clean ceramic pans and how to maintain them properly.
To ensure durability and keep their properties intact, it's recommended to always wash them by hand once they’ve cooled down. Use a soft sponge and non-abrasive soap to avoid scratching the surface. Dishwasher cleaning is not advised, as it's harsher and may reduce the lifespan of the coating.
If food is stuck, you can soak the pan in warm water for a few hours before cleaning it with a sponge and some soap.
As mentioned, seasoning isn’t necessary. But if non-stick performance diminishes, it is said that ceramic pans can be re-seasoned. It’s a simple process: heat oil over low heat for about 15 minutes.
5. Which ceramic pan to choose
As you’ve seen, there are many and varied options, so we understand that choosing can be difficult. If you don't yet have a ceramic pan and are thinking of getting one, you’ll find a wide selection of the best ceramic pans in our Ceramic Frying Pans section.
Among them, we must highlight the Ceratal® water-based ceramic pan from Fissler, one of the best-selling ceramic pans in Europe, or the Ceramic Le Creuset with Sol-gel technology as a similar alternative. For those looking for a more budget-friendly option with great value for money, the Life pan from BRA is an excellent choice. And for those who care about quality and love clever design – especially with the added bonus of a foldable handle that saves space – the Space ceramic pan by Joseph Joseph is a fantastic pick.
