In summer, it’s easy to fall into the trap of ice creams, sugary soft drinks and industrial desserts. With the heat, holidays and free time, the cravings for sweets multiply… and sometimes willpower gets left behind on the sun lounger.
Turning 40 is affecting me too – it’s something I can’t hide. The hormonal changes at this age (which totally caught me off guard!) and work stress throughout the year often lead me – I don’t know about you – to anxiety that makes me snack constantly or crave sugar all the time! That’s why I made a list of foods and alternative ideas to enjoy in those moments when temptation is taking over!
I can assure you that it’s possible to enjoy sweet things without overdoing the sugar. Here are 10 fresh and easy ideas, with simple ingredients, to always have on hand and avoid those sugar spikes that leave you feeling drowsy afterwards.
Easy food and snack ideas to avoid sugary treats
1. Unsweetened dried fruit
Mango, pineapple, apple or dried apricot are sweet and natural treats. Always look for the version without syrups or added sugars: just fruit. Perfect to carry in your bag or keep in a jar in the kitchen.

2. Dark chocolate with 85% cocoa or more
A couple of squares of good quality dark chocolate can satisfy your sweet tooth and provide antioxidants. The higher the cocoa content, the less sugar it has and the more satisfying it is.
3. Natural yoghurt with fresh fruit
Simple and quick: add strawberries, blueberries, peach or banana to plain or Greek yoghurt with no added sugar. If you want more sweetness, try a touch of cinnamon or a few drops of vanilla.

4. Homemade fruit ice cream
Blend frozen fruit (banana, mango, strawberries) with a little yoghurt and you’ll have a creamy, sugar-free ice cream full of flavour. Freeze in ice lolly moulds if you want to have some always ready to go.
5. Nuts with pure cocoa powder
Almonds or hazelnuts coated in unsweetened cocoa powder. Crunchy, satisfying, and with that bitter-sweet taste reminiscent of chocolate – but with far less sugar.

6. 100% fruit compotes
Fruit compotes or purées with no added sugar are perfect cold, as a yoghurt topping or even warm with cinnamon. They're easy to find in most supermarkets.
7. Stuffed dates
Open a date and stuff it with an almond or a teaspoon of natural peanut butter – it’s a sweet yet 100% natural bite. One or two are enough to satisfy a craving. Add chopped hazelnuts or pistachios on top for extra energy if you like.

8. Coconut chips
Crunchy, aromatic and naturally sweet. Look for 100% coconut chips without added sugar or strange oils. Perfect for snacking between meals.
9. Fruit skewers
Make skewers with grapes, melon, kiwi or strawberries. Keep them in the fridge for a fresh, attractive snack that’s perfect for hot weather.
10. Bowl of whipped cottage cheese with toppings
Whipped cottage cheese (full fat or 0%) is creamy, filling and very versatile. Add fresh fruit, nuts, seeds or a little pure cocoa powder. It’s sweet, refreshing and rich in protein – ideal to keep hunger at bay.
Tips to resist summer temptations and sweet cravings
- Always keep healthy options ready at home.
- Buy small portions or divide snacks to avoid overeating without noticing.
- Eat calmly and without screens: you'll enjoy it more and eat less.
- Stay well hydrated – we often confuse thirst with hunger.
Remember, it’s not about giving up sweets, but choosing them wisely. With these 10 snacks, you can take care of yourself, refresh and enjoy… without sugar highs and crashes.
Also, keep in mind that willpower pays off: the less sugar you eat, the less your body will crave it. Be strong and start choosing healthy alternatives when sugar cravings hit – you’ll see the temptation gets smaller over time.

Gracias
