Affogato is a simple and delicious Italian dessert , an ice cream cup that combines ice cream and coffee . Its name means "drowned" in Italian, which refers to how the ice cream is "drowned" in the hot espresso. I think it's a wonderful dessert, because it combines two flavors that go together so well (vanilla and coffee) while resulting in a very elegant cup to serve .

The traditional version simply combines ice cream with coffee, but it is also popular to add a splash of liquor as well , which if you decide to do so, adds that touch of sophistication to the presentation and flavor that you may be interested in looking for.

Let's get to the recipe, which couldn't be simpler!

Ingredients

  • 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream (you can use other flavors such as hazelnut, salted caramel, vanilla with pecans or chocolate... according to your preference).
  • 1 cup of freshly brewed double espresso (approximately 30-40 ml of coffee).
  • (Optional) A splash of liquor of your choice (e.g. Amaretto, Frangelico, or Kahlúa)
  • To decorate (optional), chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, chopped hazelnuts, caramelized walnuts or sliced almonds.

Preparation

  1. Make a double espresso (about 30-40 ml of coffee) with the KitchenAid arm coffee maker .
  2. Place one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream (or ice cream of your choice) in asundae or cocktail glass .
  3. Drizzle the ice cream with coffee.
  4. Optionally add a splash of Amaretto (this is how I like it best, but you can leave out the liquor or add others of your choice, see notes).
  5. Decorate with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, chopped caramelized nuts or sliced almonds, if desired.

Enjoy! You can serve it with the elegant , long, straight-ended WMF ice cream spoons .

Grades

Adding liquor to Affogato is optional. I enjoy it neat or with Amaretto, but here are some liquor options that pair well with affogato:

  1. Amaretto: An almond liqueur that adds a sweet and slightly bitter flavor.
  2. Frangelico: A hazelnut liqueur that complements ice cream and coffee wonderfully.
  3. Kahlúa: A coffee liqueur that intensifies the flavor of espresso.
  4. Baileys: An Irish cream liqueur that adds a creamy texture and smooth flavor.
  5. Sherry , Pedro Ximénez type: Very sweet and with an intense flavor of raisins and caramel, it can add a delicious contrast to the bitterness of coffee.
