Today, while I was cooking, my mind drifted for a moment from where I was and transported me to a large kitchen, very large, with light-colored cabinets and plenty of light; a kitchen with a very wide island in the center, and a huge window that looked out onto a garden with a lovely lawn and my small vegetable patch in a corner.
Around me the kids were playing while they waited for me to finish preparing the meal. Little Jan started to fuss from his high chair, but he smiled when I gave him a bread stick to quiet his hunger. That way I could finish cooking calmly, wearing my cotton apron, which by some miracle was still white.
On the counter there was a tall glass vase with a bouquet of flowers that added color to the kitchen. I, as usual, smiled while I cooked, thinking about how happy the children were, how well they got along and what good kids they are. Because they really are!
I also imagined that soon there would be more family meals, full of hearty feasts surrounded by lovely, repeated stories that we all know, but which always end in shared laughter and jokes among the regulars. These are meals where one escapes the rush of daily life, the stress of work, the worries we all suffer, and can relax for a while with those they love most. They are moments that make us feel good, at peace, fulfilled, calm, joyful.
And a bit of all that is what I wish for the coming year, for myself and for each one of you. I mean that dream kitchen — which for some won’t be a kitchen, but will be another much-desired thing — and I also mean those moments of peace and joy with family.
May you be very happy!
