If you love cooking with iron, you'll fall in love with both sides of this frying pan. The Lodge Sugar Skull round cast iron skillet brings together everything you value in a Lodge skillet: a sturdy single-piece construction, excellent heat retention, a practical design with a handle and pouring spouts... and a skull on its outer base that makes it a beautiful special edition.

When you turn the pan over, you'll discover what makes it a collector's piece: an embossed Mexican sugar skull, surrounded by floral and ornamental details. Designed by artist Lourdes Villagómez, it pays tribute to the Day of the Dead, a tradition that celebrates life and keeps alive the memory of loved ones. A meaningful design that makes this frying pan a special piece both to give as a gift and to enjoy in your own kitchen.

Made of cast iron, it stands out for its great long-lasting heat retention, and for its even heat distribution. Its natural non-stick surface, with no coatings and PFOA-free, and the beautiful engravings on its base make it a collector's frying pan that is a must in your kitchen.

The Lodge skillet offers a cooking surface that, as well as being very efficient, becomes more non-stick with use. With it you can sauté, brown, griddle, fry, roast and bake savoury recipes as well as doughs and sweet dishes. It holds heat wonderfully and, thanks to the high temperatures iron reaches, it's a very efficient frying pan that you'll enjoy cooking with and savouring its delicious results.

What makes the skillet the classic American frying pan?

For 125 years, the Lodge skillet has been a staple in kitchens around the world. Made in the United States from iron and treated with oil, its naturally seasoned cooking surface is ready to help you turn your meals into delicious moments.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Lodge iron pieces are heavy and are not dishwasher-safe. The good news (apart from being incredible, natural frying pans) is that they come pre-seasoned from the factory, so you can start using them as soon as they arrive (no prior seasoning needed). But remember: they are cast iron but not enamelled, so they must be dried straight after washing or they will rust. If rust appears, simply rub it with a scouring pad to restore it. If you like, you can season it from time to time... Although you're doing so every time you use it! Use it daily, dry it straight away, and you'll have a pan for life (and incredibly tasty recipes with natural flavours!).

What makes the Lodge cast iron skillet special

  • Its sturdy construction. The skillet is made of cast iron, with no non-stick coating, PFOA or toxic elements. This sturdiness lets you use any utensil when cooking with it, even stainless steel ones.
  • Its ease of handling. Although it's a sturdy frying pan, it's designed to be easy to handle. Its short, ergonomic handlemakes it easy to handle and is perfect both for using it in the oven, however large, and for saving storage space.
  • Its durability. The frying pan is made entirely of cast iron in a single piece, so it will far outlast a lifetime.
  • Its excellent balance of quality, durability and price. They are affordable pieces with exceptional durability and unquestionable quality.
  • Its textured finish. Lodge makes all its frying pans in a single piece using unique sand moulds; this gives them their characteristic slightly textured finish on both the inside and outside surfaces and makes each piece unique. With use, a patina forms that will eventually create a smooth, naturally non-stick surface.
  • Its factory seasoning. All Lodge cast iron pieces are seasoned at the factory, so that they are ready to use when they arrive. Seasoning cast iron, a process called polymerisation, consists of applying a layer of vegetable oil to the piece and heating it in the oven to a temperature high enough for the oil to bond to the iron. This process gives Lodge cookware its classic black patina, creating a naturally non-stick cooking surface, which is also a protective layer that helps prevent the cookware from rusting.
  • Its excellent non-stick properties. Lodge pieces offer a natural non-stick surface that even lets you cook with almost no oil. What's more, the more you use them, the more non-stick they become.
  • Its great heat retention and even heat distribution. Being made of iron, it retains heat excellently for longer and spreads it evenly. Thanks to the high temperatures iron reaches, it seals food in its own juices, keeping all its flavour. The result is much tastier, just like traditional flavours.
  • Its versatility. Lodge pieces are suitable for all types of hobs and heat sources. You can cook with it on gas, ceramic, electric and induction hobs, wood-burning stoves, barbecues and in the oven.
  • Its pouring spouts. The traditional skillet design includes two pouring spouts on the sides that make it easier to pour food, especially when cooking dishes with sauce, such as pasta dishes or more liquid stews, like pulses or casseroles.
  • The over 125 years of Lodge experience in making cast iron pieces. Manufacturing since 1896, Lodge is an iconic brand in the USA, its country of origin, where it still makes all its cast iron products at the Lodge foundries in South Pittsburg, Tennessee.

When you want to use it, just let it heat up gradually so the heat spreads evenly across the whole piece, and start cooking when it is very hot. To clean it, let it cool first; wash it with a non-abrasive sponge and detergent and lightly oil the inside surface to prevent rust. For optimal care, always store it in a dry place.

Remember that the frying pan is made of iron in a single piece, so both the handle and the helper handle get hot. With the Lodge silicone hot handle holder and the Lodge silicone pot handle holders, you can handle it safely without burning yourself.

NOTE: Factory seasoning gives Lodge cast iron pieces a rustic finish with certain imperfections, such as the odd brown mark on the rim, handle or grip. Don't worry! They are small spots where the oil has not bonded to the iron, but you can use your piece without any problem. It is not a defect or rust and disappears with normal use and care.
