Since we’re just about to head into autumn, I thought it would be nice to talk about some secrets and ideas that are very helpful when creating the perfect autumn table.

Autumn is a very colorful and calm season of the year. It is also full of special, beautiful fruits, and cold is always lurking too. So, with all that in mind, we can use a few ideas to create a beautiful seasonal table, each in our own way or by tailoring it to our taste.

I really like making centerpieces with natural elements. I think they bring a lot of life to the table, especially in autumn, since we can take advantage of all those colorful falling leaves and reddish branches to create truly natural table decor. But a table is not just a centerpiece; on the contrary, you can arrange many different elements, with and without volume, to make it special. The centerpiece can be there, or not.

Preparing a beautiful autumn table is not very mysterious, but there are different techniques and tips worth keeping in mind, ideal for making the whole table feel harmonious and for ensuring every piece fits perfectly. What do you think? Are you daring enough to surprise your guests with a truly beautiful autumn table? Let’s do it — I’m leaving you with the tips and ideas, and that doesn’t mean you have to follow them all. Play around with them or try the ones you like best or that catch your eye to make the table your own and in your style.

Surprise with rustic blue colors

If you use an unexpected or striking color palette on your table, I’m sure you’ll immediately capture your guests’ attention. I invite you to use a rustic or washed blue, which you can combine with other more neutral colors while filling the table with that sense of peace and joy that blue always brings us

For inspiration, take a look at this autumn table in the photo. It is set with different shades of blue, the main one being the tablecloth. It is enhanced by other blue tones and by the white, gray, or cream tones of the mini cocottes, plates, and other table elements. These work as unifying secondary colors.

A very important factor in an autumn table is adding some natural contrast, such as this centerpiece made with natural red branches.

Use colors that create contrast

Contrast plays an important role in making certain pieces stand out or creating the visual delight you’re looking for when setting the table.

You can find contrast by playing with the color of the tableware, the pots... or by placing natural elements in a color that stands out strongly from the rest. You’ll see the table instantly comes to life, even with just a bold splash of color in one spot.

Set down a simple white tablecloth and you’ll have the perfect backdrop to highlight a fruit-and-flower arrangement, or to make the tableware or any other element stand out. The combination of lime with burgundy, orange, and white is ideal, as it reflects the classic colors of autumn. But there are other colors, like gray, which you can combine, or cream, which are neutral and pair very well with everything, so you can make any more intense-colored piece stand out against them.

One very important aspect is drawing your guests’ attention to the center of the table with a centerpiece.

Keep a soft neutral palette

With white, cream, light gray, and gold colors, you’ll highlight the natural feel of the table and fill the atmosphere with peace, elegance, and calm. To add a touch of color, you can use patterned cloth napkins, for example, or let the food take center stage with its color and aroma.

Other ideas include bringing white to the center of the table and showing small pumpkins as natural decor, or making a centerpiece with dried autumn foliage and small gold details.

Decorate the table with seasonal elements

If you want to bring autumn to your table, use pinecones, chestnuts, pumpkins, classic seasonal leaves in green, red, yellow, or orange... You can also use a wooden trivet... Anything that brings the forest’s autumn to the table will make it an autumn table.

If you use simple-colored tableware, you’ll have a wide range of possibilities, and you’ll be able to add color to the table with placemats, cloth napkins, and a central vase filled with colorful flowers, finishing with small pumpkins, pinecones, or other fruits scattered around the table.

Combine modern elements with rustic ones

This autumn table combines rustic and modern elements. From different chairs to adding a modern touch to a rustic table with modern plates and cutlery, or adding a gold piece to bring elegance.

Small details make the difference

Something as simple as a piece of twine, or placing some seasonal elements on the table, makes a difference in our day-to-day life. A few pinecones, a piece of twine, a note, an envelope with a chocolate inside, some seeds scattered across the table as decoration... There are countless small details that will decorate the table, and if you use raw, orange, or toasted tones, that detail will smell like autumn.

Use a monochromatic palette

Using a monochromatic palette always gives a more modern look and, if setting the table feels difficult, this is a good way to start: simply choose one color. Personally, I love orange, as it is such a characteristic autumn color. Once you’ve chosen the base color, you can pair it with more neutral colors like ivory or white to keep the table’s overall look from feeling overwhelming. Don’t you think orange is the ideal color for an autumn table? Try pairing it too with chocolate brown or a lime shade and pure white. You’ll get a combination with a lot of charm.
