The Steam Roaster is one of the most iconic pieces from Römertopf. The German brand has been a benchmark in clay roasters for decades. These Roman pots revive the art of traditional cooking and feature a distinctive design, with classic reliefs on the lid and base, inspired by the ancient pots used by the Romans.
These ovens are made from natural Westerwald clay (Germany) completely free of lead, cadmium, dyes, plasticizers, or toxic substances. In these roasters, only the interior of the base has a vitrified glaze, but the rest of the oven is unglazed. They are semi-porous and, by soaking them before cooking, they are perfect for cooking with internal steam, without needing to add oil or fat.
Römertopf terracotta ovens offer a traditional, efficient, and simple way to cook. Clay is one of the oldest and safest cooking materials known, and it distributes heat evenly, preserving the juices, aromas, and nutrients of the food. Cooking is natural, healthy, and low-fat; food cooks gently, resulting in very tender and flavorful interiors, with crispy and golden exteriors.
When you receive your Römertopf terracotta oven, you will need to wash it and also soak the lid for a long time. It is necessary to immerse the lid in water for 45 minutes. After that time, remove the lid from the water and let it air dry. The base, having a vitrified glaze, does not require this initial soaking, and you only need to do this long soak for the lid once.
